STAY SAFE AT THE ROADSIDE WITH GREEN FLAG''S GUIDE
04 November 2004 - Green Flag Motoring Assistance
To mark Road Safety Week this year (November 8-14) Green Flag MotoringAssistance has produced an essential glove box guide to staying safe on thehard shoulder.
Road Safety Week is an annual educational event, organised by national charity Brake and co-sponsored by Green Flag, which raises awareness about the ten people killed on UK roads every single day. The hard shoulder is one of the most dangerous places to be on Britain''s roads and, according to the Department for Transport, around 50 motorists are killed and over 600 motorists are injured while parked on the hard shoulder every year*. The glove box guide has been produced by Green Flag in association with Brake to help drivers avoid putting themselves and other road users at unnecessary risk. Spokesperson for Green Flag Melanie Denny said: ''This free guide advises motorists on how to use the hard shoulder safely, when to use the hard shoulder, and perhaps more importantly, when use of the hard shoulder can be dangerous. It is particularly useful for motorists who frequently use the motorway, such as truck drivers and fleets.'' Mary Williams, Brake''s chief executive added: ''Last year, a staggering 217 motorists were killed on Britain''s motorways, and 1,234 were seriously injured. One in six of the deaths that occurred on motorways were on the hard shoulder. Green Flag''s hard shoulder safety guide will advise drivers how to be safe on the hard shoulder and subsequently help to reduce the number of people killed and injured on the motorway.'' To obtain a free copy of the Green Flag glove box guide to hard shoulder safety please email your name and address to info@smartassoc.co.uk or alternatively post your details to: Green Flag hard shoulder safety guide, c/o Smart Association, 9 Blayd''s Yard, Leeds LS1 4AD. Brake is a national registered charity that campaigns to prevent death and injury on the roads and provide support for people bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. This year''s theme for Road Safety Week is drink-driving as Brake highlights the fact that drink-driving is on the increase.
