RICHARD COOPER STEPS UP TO THE BMW MOTORRAD FIRST TEAM
12 September 2007 - BMW Motorrad GB
The world’s most famous motorcycle endurance race, the Bol d’Or 24hr, takes place in France on 15 September
BMW Motorrad will have two teams lining up on the grid for the penultimate round in this year’s QMMF Endurance World Championship. Whilst competing with the second BMW team, British rider Richard Cooper, 24, raced to an impressive second in class and ninth overall at the previous round at Oschersleben. Following his outstanding performance in Germany, Cooper has been asked to step up to the first team by BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team Manager Berti Hauser. The BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team has made an impressive return in its first season of world championship motorcycle racing for 50 years, having notched up two class wins in three races on the R 1200 S sports boxer. The team is hoping Richard will help achieve a hat-trick at the Bol d’Or. Richard said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I’d like to thank the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team for giving me the chance to race with the first team. I love riding the boxers. I’ve ridden BMWs before in the Boxer Cup Series and find them a hell of a lot of fun. “Although we are a little down on power compared to the big inline fours, the R 1200 S has other advantages. For example, the Telelever suspension unit allows us to brake very deep into the turns and pass other riders under heavy braking. Also, the boxer’s low fuel consumption allows our team to stay out on circuit for longer, resulting in fewer pit-stops. There are also the high corner speeds that we can run with our bike, which are definitely on par with the other top teams. A podium at the Bol d’Or is certainly our goal but there’s a lot of tough competition!” The Bol d’Or is more than just a motorcycle endurance race. It is a festival of biking that attracts more than 100,000 spectators to the Magny-Cours circuit in Burgundy to watch the top-class race action. As well as the prestigious 24-hour race, the Bol d’Or is famed for its unique party atmosphere which includes stunt shows, exhibitions, traders and even rock concerts throughout the weekend. Practice starts on Wednesday 12 September, with qualifying taking place on the Thursday and Friday. The famous race itself starts at 15:00 on the Saturday.
