NO TRAIN, NO GAIN
07 September 2007 - Ride Safe Back Safe
Lancashire’s RideSafe BackSafe initiative has developed and adopted three routes to better riding for motorcyclists in the county.
RideSafe BackSafe was created by biking enthusiasts for the benefit of all bikers in the North West region as part of the initiative it helps young riders develop further skills through enrichment days, and works with the police and with the Local County Council to offer assessment courses and educational courses as a possible alternative to prosecution for minor traffic offences. Shelby Williams, Road Safety Advisor to Lancashire Constabulary and a member of the RideSafe BackSafe team, explains the Rider Assessment scheme;- “The Rider Assessment Scheme, run by Lancashire County Council, is a free 60 to 90 minute assessment of riding skills on a one-to-one basis with an Advanced Riding Instructor. At the end of an open road ride out, the motorcyclist is given a report, providing a comprehensive assessment of their riding skills and a list of approved local training schools that they can call, if they wish to improve their riding further. The course is available to all bikers, including learner riders, within the county council area and can be completed close to home at a time and date to suit.” Shelby also explains that in addition the Constabulary is keen to help bikers to improve their riding skills and attitude on the roads, rather than just offering punishment. “The Constabulary has adopted the ACPO Rider Intervention and Developing Experience Scheme and it can be offered as an alternative to prosecution for riding without due care and attention depending on the circumstances. A motorcyclist stopped for non compliance with traffic signals, wheelying, or endangering other road users for example, may be referred to the RiDE scheme for training. Although the cost of the course is borne by the motorcyclist, the alternative might be penalty points on their driving licence and a fine of up to £2,500 “. RideSafe BackSafe has developed The Rider Enrichment Scheme which focuses on new motorcycle riders and particularly young riders. The seminars are offered through colleges, universities and other groups or organisations keen to provide education and information about the important basics for those new to two wheels. Rider Enrichment Days for young riders are also being organised across the region. These days will be promoted in the local media and via the RideSafe BackSafe website. This scheme provides advice about the right protective clothing, legal requirements and defensive riding techniques, together with hints and tips about adopting the right attitude on the road, threat perception and riding style. Shelby continues;- “ The RideSafe BackSafe initiative is already playing a major role in reducing biker casualties on Lancashire’s roads, but we need to continue our quest through education, information and practical help “.
