TWO PODIUMS BRING HASLAM CLOSER TO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
24 July 2007 - Airwaves Ducati
Both Airwaves Ducati riders are in closer touch with the British Superbike Championship lead following a frantic day''s race action that saw both Johnny Rea and Ryuichi Kyonari crash out.
Rain literally stopped play for qualifying at Mallory Park, so the grid lined up according to championship positions, leaving Leon on third and Greg fourth. In the first 30-lap race Leon started in fifth and Greg in sixth as the top six riders moved away from the rest of the field. Leon moved into fourth position to battle with Jonathan Rea for the final podium spot. Kiyonari then crashed out whilst leading, pushing Leon into third and Greg up to fifth. Leon continued to push hard but neither Airwaves Ducati rider bettered their position, taking the chequered flag in third and fifth. The Airwaves Ducati riders both got a good start in race two and by the end of lap one Leon was in third and Greg was sixth. Following an appearance by the safety car on lap 10 the race re-commenced and Leon was chasing Jonathan Rea’s second place again, when Rea crashed out on lap 22 causing a red flag and declaration of the race. This resulted in a second place finish for Leon and a seventh position for Greg. Come rain or shine, Q8Oils deliver high quality lubrication that gives the Airwaves Ducati riders the confidence to push their machines to the limit whatever the conditions. Greg had stated after the first race that he was feeling discomfort in his ribs from his injury in the previous round. ''I could not go any quicker; race two was much better than race one but I would have had to be strong to pass anyone and I wasn’t feeling too strong today.'' Leon Haslam was clearly pleased with his 36 points today saying; ''Considering this is one of our worst tracks I am over the moon that I have come here and closed 11 points on the championship leaders. It has been a good weekend for me but obviously it is such a shame that it has come after such sad news on Friday. I would like to send my condolences to the Bridewells and Team NB; Ollie was such a nice guy, it is really sad news for everyone involved in the sport.'' (The Naturally Best Suzuki rider Ollie Bridewell died following a crash during practice on Friday at Mallory Park).
