CHALLENGING TIMES IN CHESHIRE
17 July 2007 - Phil Burgen Race Academy

Round eight of the 2007 Bennetts British Superbike Championship highlighted the importance of the Phil Burgan Race Academy (PBRA) for supported riders Jonathan Rea and Kev Coghlan.

Both riders faced challenges brought about by tricky conditions at the 2.692-mile Cheshire circuit.

PBRA is committed to supporting British motorcycle racing stars of the future. The academy is supporting Rea in the domestic Superbike series, Coghlan in the British 125GP class and current World Superbike Championship leader James Toseland in 2007.

Rea arrived at the event with high expectations following three consecutive victories at Mondello Park in Ireland and Scotland’s Knockhill. The Ulsterman got a strong start to the opening 17-lap race and took the lead from pole position. He maintained station at the front of the field until a mistake on lap four saw him run off the track. Rea retained control of the motorcycle and rejoined the pack in fourth position, but instantly passed Leon Haslam and Karl Harris for second place.

However, on lap seven Rea crashed out of contention and was unable to remount the machine and continue. He returned to race two even more determined to succeed. Rea once again took the holeshot from pole position but was relegated to second place after being passed by team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari. The Japanese rider crashed out of the 14-lap race on lap four – leaving PBRA-supported Rea to take the victory.

In the 125GP series, Coghlan followed Rea’s example and took an early race lead. However, he was unable to maintain the position at the front of the pack due to pressure from rivals in the difficult conditions. The PBRA-supported rider continued to dice for a place on the podium until the 12-lap race was red-flagged and the result declared on lap eight. Coghlan settled for third place and held onto second position in the overall standings.

PBRA-supported Toseland has just returned from testing in Japan for the prestigious Suzuka 8-hour race. He is back in action at Brno next weekend, where he hopes to maintain his position at the top of the World Superbike Championship standings.
