NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL KICK-STARTS THE RIDE
20 July 2007 - National Geographic

DURING September National Geographic, one of the world’s most watched television channels, will transmit the first of a six-episode motorcycle journey as part of its mainstream entertainment.

The overland adventure is called ‘The Ride – Alaska to Patagonia’. Dates and times will be announced shortly.

The series chronicles the fortunes of 11 novice motorcycle adventurers on a marathon journey that encompassed the entire length of the Trans Americas Highway. Starting from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska The Ride crossed two continents, visited 12 countries, clocked up 29,000 kilometres and finished in Patagonia at Tierra del Fuego – off the southern tip of Argentina.

The largest-ever group of overland motorcycle adventurers (for an Americas ride) was assembled by double Guinness World Record holders Kevin and Julia Sanders as part of the GlobeBusters programme. Although the Sanders had previously set a world record of only 34 days for the ride, the couple devised a less frantic but equally torturous itinerary that spanned almost five months. The idea was for the group to experience something of the culture and ambience of the countries it passed through. Unfortunately, this didn’t lessen the hazards and The Ride subsequently threw everything it could at the 11 non-celebrity bikers, organisers, one-man backup crew, and professional cameraman.

The group’s trials, traumas and tribulations included riding the world’s most scary railway bridge along nothing wider than a plank of wood; getting caught in a mountain landslide; coping with Guatemala gun culture; suffering the individual agonies of a broken leg, fractured wrist, cracked ribs and debilitating illness; the misery of a written-off bike; and the baring of every facet of the human psyche. And through it all, team spirit remained stoically and astonishing intact.

Those unable to receive the National Geographic channel (Sky 526) do not have to miss what will become a classic motorcycle adventure staring archetypal riders. Logon to www.GlobeBusters.com and purchase Cambridge Film & Television Production’s six superbly filmed episodes – now available on ‘The Ride’ DVD for a meagre £17.99.
