PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, AM I BOVVERED ?
08 July 2007 - Ride Safe Back Safe
Young bike riders in the North West region are being encouraged to wear the right protective clothing, rather than worrying about what is cool or easy to wear.
Lancashire’s RideSafe BackSafe initiative is focussing on the youngest and least experienced riders, typically on scooters, mopeds and small bikes; as they form a significant proportion of road collision casualties in the region. The RideSafe BackSafe team need the support of local schools and colleges and are hoping to use this as a channel through which they can talk to youngsters who are new to biking. The key message will be that running the risk of serious injury and suffering scars for life are just not cool and wearing the right protective clothing can make a big difference in an accident. Road Safety Adviser to Lancashire Constabulary, Shelby Williams explains the campaign;- “ Riding a bike or scooter is brilliant fun and makes a statement about who you are, but riding out in jeans and T-shirts without gloves and boots is irresponsible. Watching any motorcycle racing at the weekend, you will see the stars wearing well made, protective suits with abrasion resistant panels and body armour and they do it to be smart, not fashionable. The tarmac on the A59 or M62 is just as hard as it is at Donnington “. “ This is not about persecuting bikers – but the facts are that bikers are more vulnerable than anyone else on the road, many other road users aren’t aware of this and some are not looking out for you. Getting kitted out with the right gear is cool and needn’t be expensive. We need to encourage every bike rider to visit a reputable dealer, take advice and wear the best protective clothing they can afford to buy. Only then will they look street-smart “. National Motorcycle Week runs from 15th to 21st July and is designed to promote motorcycling and scootering to a much wider audience. The campaign also aims to make others aware that bikers are from all walks of life and to highlight the vulnerability of bikers on the road. The RideSafe BackSafe initiative supports this campaign.
